From Acupoints to Wellness: The First Step in Self-Healing
9/21/20253 min read

In the fast-paced modern life, anxiety and insomnia have become the norm. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) holds that these troubles are not isolated phenomena but signals of internal disharmony of Qi (energy) and Shen (spirit). The first step in self-healing is learning to listen to these signals and regulate them in a simple yet professional manner. Acupressure is the "switch" we can activate anytime in our daily lives; it requires no complex equipment, only professional knowledge at the fingertip, to redirect the flow of life.
I. Calming the Spirit and Stabilizing the Mind: Deep Healing for Insomnia
Quality sleep is the foundation for nourishing the body and mind. For those plagued by insomnia, the Anmian acupoint (Anmian Xue) is an indispensable "secret switch" before bedtime every day.
Anmian Acupoint: Finding the Harbor of Tranquility
The Anmian acupoint is located behind the ear. To find it, first locate the prominent bone behind the earlobe (the mastoid process). Extending about 1 centimeter downward from this prominence, you will find a distinct depression, which is the exact location of this point.
Massage Technique: Use the pad of your finger to gently slide and press downward. Avoid vigorous rubbing, focusing instead on the coordination between rhythm and breath. Slowly release the pressure after each press for 3 to 5 seconds, repeating 3 to 5 times.1 This gentle stimulation helps relax tense nerves, allowing the body to gradually enter a state of rest.
Besides Anmian, the Shenmen acupoint (Spirit Gate) on the wrist (the depression on the little finger side of the wrist crease) and the Yongquan acupoint (Gushing Spring) on the sole (the midpoint of the depression in the anterior third of the sole) are also frequently used to calm the heart, soothe the spirit, and relieve fatigue, serving as important aids for systematic sleep improvement.
II. Stabilizing the Heart Meridian: Diffusing Daily Anxiety
Excessive tension or emotional fluctuations can trigger physical symptoms like palpitations and chest tightness. The Neiguan acupoint (Neiguan Xue), as the Yuan (Source) point of the Pericardium Meridian of Hand Jueyin, is a critical barrier protecting the "Heart Spirit" (which governs mental activities in TCM).
Neiguan Acupoint: The Protective Barrier for the Heart Spirit
The location of the Neiguan acupoint is standardized and easy to find: on the palm side of the forearm, two cun (about three finger widths) measured upward from the center of the wrist crease, between the two large tendons.
Core Efficacy: Neiguan nourishes Qi and Blood, calms the mind, and stabilizes the spirit. It is effective not only in relieving palpitations and nausea caused by excessive tension but also in alleviating chest tightness and anxiety, making it a versatile acupoint for coping with modern stress.
Professional Technique: When massaging Neiguan, it is advisable to alternate between clockwise and counter-clockwise rubbing, performing 30 to 50 repetitions each time.6 The key lies in the intensity—it must reach the professional sensation known as Suan Zhang (soreness and distension), which is a slight numbness, swelling, or aching, but not sharp pain.7 This appropriate intensity signals that Qi and Blood have been activated, helping to maximize the therapeutic effect.
III. The "Dosage" Principle and Safety Advice for Self-Healing
The effectiveness of acupressure relies on consistency and professionalism. It is generally recommended to massage the points 1 to 2 times daily, each session lasting 10 to 15 minutes.
Remember, continuous low-intensity stimulation is far superior to a single high-intensity press.8 When performing the massage, be sure to relax your body and mind, clear your thoughts, and focus your attention on your breathing and the contact of your fingertips.
Safety Warning: While daily acupressure is a safe self-therapy, special populations such as pregnant women should exercise caution when using strongly stimulating points (such as Hegu and Taichong) or seek guidance from a professional TCM practitioner to avoid affecting the circulation of Qi and Blood.
From Anmian to Neiguan, through the smallest movements of the fingertips, we are able to communicate with the deep wisdom of the body. Self-healing is not achieved overnight; it is a process of transforming professional knowledge into a daily habit. If you wish to integrate this self-healing wisdom into every day of your life and systematically master the techniques of regulating the spirit with the entire body's acupoints, consider enrolling in a Professional Course. Furthermore, setting up Acupoint Visualization Wallpaper on your phone or computer allows these key acupoint diagrams to serve as daily reminders, helping you solidify knowledge into an effective health habit.
